The class 40 rule was created by an association of offshore racers, naval architects and designers. Their aim: to develop a fast, competitive, short handed offshore yacht that sponsors and individuals would be attracted to without the major price tag.
The class 40 : a box rule that restricts the use of super - expensive materials, construction techniques and items such as canting keels and carbon hulls.
The epoxy sanswich hulls and decks are infused in female moulds in the isle of wight. Constructed using all top quality SP Systems products and with engineering and infusion experts optimising the process.
Designed by Owen Clarke and build by Paul Metcalf from Sea Ventures, www.express40.com. Unlike a lot of the other class 40s she is CAT 0 compliant, which means additional water tight bulkhead this will allow her to participate in the Global Ocean Challenge, that having been our primary objective, a double handed around the world yacht race, September 2008. www.portimaoglobaloceanchallenge.com
Category 0 : trans-oceanic races, including races which pass through areas in which air or sea temperatures are likely to be less than 5 degrees celsius other than temporarily, where yachts must be completely self sufficient for very extended periods of time, capable of withstanding heavy storms and prepared to meet serious emergencies without the expectation of outside assistance... welcome to the southern ocean.
